First Sunday of Lent, 2023・Year A,
Praying, fasting, and almsgiving are central acts for the devout Jews. These acts are proper for us Christians too especially during the season of Lent. Following our liturgical calendar for this year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 22, while Passion Sunday falls on April 4. Paschal Triduum follows on the next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
During the season of Lent, there is emphasis on the importance of doings all these acts quietly and without arrogance. The emphasis aims on not losing the real purpose which is bringing us closer to God and His ways. Many authors would simply explain that no one should even know we are praying more, and sharing more, This may mean being careful not to draw attention from others making our arrogance to take over the cross of Christ and His triumph.
While an act of fasting as well as an act of almsgiving can be taken with deeper meaning, I believe that we are all encouraged especially during these 40-day long Lenten season to take them literally. While many of us are used to lessen our food intake for diet, fasting during the season of Lent is far more than that. Fasting in fact talks a lot about not on self-love but love of neighbors. By reason of old age, however, may need good and sound decision-making between health and higher purpose of fasting during Lent.
We do not let ourselves forget to share something of what we have with those who are in need. Many speakers may simply propose to take money, for example, that we suppose to spend on a fancy meal. One may continue to say to forego a fancy meal and give the money to those who do not know where their next meal be coming from. Again, there is emphasis on performing these acts in quiet, without exhibition/show.
My dear brothers and sisters, as the ash of the Ash Wednesday indicates a very deep meaning in our present existence, we will be dealing with plenty of signs and symbolisms as we actively participate in our liturgy, and other prayer times with the community during Lent. We may be joining our prayer group offering the prayer of the station of the cross, or may be praying the Holy Rosary more than we do outside Lenten season, pray more in front of the image of the Cross of Christ, and sit more or kneel more as we come closer to the Holy Week, However, let all remember the true and holy intentions of our words and actions, for the greater glory of God.
May we actively participate on the Cross of Christ and be active witnesses and sharers of the triumph of the Cross. Have a blessed and fruitful Lenten retreat to all.
